A Learning Event on Water Conservation Campaign and Environmental Benefits and Commercial Uses of Bamboo was conducted last 19 November 2019 in Balamban, Cebu by PhilCapNet, in coordination with the Municipality of Balamban, Balamban Water District (BWD), Central Cebu River Basins Management Council and Philippine Water Partnership. The activity was attended by 65 participants from various sectors such as national government agencies, local governments, water districts, schools, NGOs, community-based organizations and youth organizations. Speakers from the BWD, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and weather bureau presented the basic hydrology and climate outlook in the region. They discussed the importance of water resources conservation and watershed and riparian protection and the roles of local government units in implementing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
The many ways in which bamboo can help to protect the riverbanks and watersheds in the region as well as their commercial uses that present livelihood opportunities for local communities were shared with the participants by the Philippine Bamboo Foundation with whom PhilCapNet has partnered in conducting nationwide training and advocacy on planting of bamboo. The event was capped by a Ceremonial Bamboo Planting at Combado-Lusaran River in Balamban, Province of Cebu, Philippines.
