Dr. Chil Soriano, PhilCapNet President, attended the 9th Biennial International Waters Conference (IWC9) that was held on 5–8 November 2018 in Marrakesh, Morocco in the same venue as the annual meeting of the Network Managers of Cap-Net UNDP. The IWC9 was organized by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) with its partner institutions. The conference is the signature event of the GEF International Waters (IW) portfolio of investments in transboundary water systems such as shared river basins, groundwater and Large Marine Ecosystems. Over 300 participants attended, representing 84 active GEF IW projects, 80 countries and GEF agencies.

Dr. Soriano attended participant-led workshops on marine spatial planning, managing aquatic biodiversity, conserving coral reef and related ecosystem services, harvesting water from fog and other very interesting and ground-breaking topics.,

She also joined the site visit to a clay pottery village project initiated by the Centre of Development of the Tensift Region, an NGO composed of professionals that initiates and builds public support and capacity for various regional development initiatives. The project introduced an artisan-made gas furnace to replace the traditional ovens using biomass and old tires. It was supported 12 years ago by The GEF Small Grants Programme being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and has been replicated in other villages in Morocco.
